Fitted furniture

Full-height bookcase, Victorian townhouse

Bristol — Clifton · 3 weeks

A 4.2 m wall under an original cornice, to be followed without cutting it.

Before: A bare wall and two flat-pack shelves bowing under the books.
After: Solid ash, sliding ladder, lighting in the rails. The cornice still runs above.

Staircase

Spiral in oak and blackened steel

Long Ashton · 5 weeks

Forming an opening and replacing a steep cottage stair.

Before: A 42-degree stair, unusable with your arms full.
After: Central steel spine, 45 mm oak treads, compliant cable balustrade.

Windows

Eight timber-aluminium windows, occupied house

Bishopston · 2 days

A 1972 house, original single glazing, family in residence.

Before: Swollen frames, two windows that no longer closed.
After: 4/16/4 argon units, no redecoration needed.

Fitted furniture

Wardrobe under a sloping ceiling, loft conversion

Redland · 4 weeks

Height varying from 0.8 m to 2.4 m across six metres.

Before: Dead space under the slope, full of boxes.
After: Twelve linear metres of hanging and drawers, sliding doors with no floor track.

Flooring

Restoring a herringbone floor

Bristol — Kingsdown · 8 days

Original 1890 floor with thirty per cent of the blocks to replace.

Before: Split blocks, blackened tone, seal flaking off in patches.
After: Reclaimed period blocks, progressive sanding, matt hard-wax oil.

Decking

Hardwood deck on pedestals

Portishead · 6 days

Forty square metres on ground falling at twelve per cent.

Before: Cracked concrete slab falling back towards the house.
After: Hardwood on adjustable pedestals, fall corrected, water taken to the garden.
